The Athletic reporter James Pearce does not believe Liverpool will sign Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Georginho Wijnaldum come back to the team.

The Holland international midfielder left Anfield on a free transfer in the summer to play for the French team. But he is not a mainstay in Mauricio Pochettino’s squad. He is playing 22 games in all competitions. But has started just nine in Ligue 1.

Earlier it was reported that Wijnaldum could return to Anfield on loan. But Pierce does not believe it will happen.

“I would be surprised if PSG went on loan for Wijnaldum in January.  And even so I don’t see Liverpool going to bring him back,” Pearce said.

“If he leaves Paris, he’d like to start somewhere where I don’t see Klopp giving him that commitment.”

Klopp certainly has more of a squad to choose from as opposed to last season when many of his stars were ruled out due to injury. And Ibrahima Konate was the only new face to arrive at Anfield in the summer.

With the Africa Cup of Nations just around the corner, Liverpool will be without heavyweights Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane for up to a month. That meaning that they have been linked with attacking replacements in January.

They’ve also had a number of their defensive stars linked with an exit, with the centre-back spot now extremely competitive with five senior options available.
